It is gratifying to see evidence reported in this Guardian article that engagement in arts and crafts helps to increase feelings of happiness and life satisfaction .
Waldorf education has long recognised the value of these activities for children’s wellbeing but also in supporting their physical, cognitive, and academic development by integrating them into the curriculum for all age groups. Fran Russell, Executive Director of Waldorf UK, highlights that simple sewing and fibre crafts build the strength and dexterity needed for small hands learning to write, as well as providing the opportunity for young children to find out about materials and their uses. Learning to knit with needles, draft sewing patterns and build models helps to embed mathematical, design and fine motor skills. Working with resistant materials - wood, copper and even stone - develops resilience, determination and persisitence.
