Waldorf UK has today launched Distance Travelled, an independent report by the University of Worcester which commends the “significant educational transformation” of Steiner Waldorf schools in England. Commissioned by Waldorf UK, the research reviews inspection outcomes between 2018 and 2024 and shows how schools have strengthened their provision while remaining true to the distinct values of Waldorf education.
Between 2018 and 2020, Ofsted raised concerns about aspects of provision in Steiner Waldorf schools. In response, schools undertook a wholesale review of leadership, professional development and curriculum design. The new report shows how, since 2021, inspection outcomes have markedly improved. Inspectors now highlight:
The report praises Waldorf UK and the schools for transforming criticism into constructive action and “rebuilding public, parental and professional confidence.”
Fran Russell, Executive Director of Waldorf UK, said: “The Ofsted criticisms were tough, leading to deep soul searching and a wholesale review of our educational provision. In turn this has led to new leadership structures, vastly improved professional development support for all staff and a new curriculum framework.”
She added that new teacher training partnerships with universities were key to sustaining progress.
Looking ahead, she said: “We still have more to do, but as concern grows that today’s narrow educational focus fuels poor mental health and absenteeism, Waldorf education shows how a more creative curriculum can ease pressure, reduce anxiety, and help children enjoy school—which is the golden key to learning.”
